How to Change Your Beauty Routine for Colder Weather
The transition to cold weather definitely calls for a tweak in our daily beauty routine. Implementing a few key ingredients and practical habits help tremendously in maintaining healthy, hydrated skin even in the winter season.
1 —
Gentle cleansing is key.
As a rule of thumb if your skin feels tight after washing it’s likely your cleanser is disrupting your natural moisture barrier. We want our skin to feel calm after washing so consider switching to a gentler cleanser or swapping your water based cleanser for an oil cleanser. This can help restore moisture and protect the skin barrier even in the colder winter weather. Be sure to avoid sodium lauryl sulfates and fragrances as these have high acid content and strip away good oils in your skin.
2 —
Stay hydrated.
Don’t forget to drink tons of h20! Though we aren’t sweating the same during summertime, our body still requires just as much water. To make your water intake more consistent, choose water first thing in the morning, before drinking coffee, tea or juice. This will help your skin and your body, as water is critical in digestion and other bodily functions.
3 —
Avoid super hot showers and baths.
Opt for warm water instead of super hot suds, as they strip your skin of its natural oils and damage protective barriers.
4 —
Moisturize! Then moisturize some more!
Our skin becomes drier and more sensitive during colder weather. Use nutrient rich, oil based formulas that contain grapeseed, jojoba, camellia flower and rosehip oils, just to name a few. These ingredients help lock in moisture and also help maintain the a balanced, even complexion.
5 —
Don’t forget to sweat.
Even if it’s a simple walk or at-home YouTube workout for just 20 minutes, sweating helps deliver nutrients to your skin which keeps your skin healthy. It can be challenging to stick to a workout routine in the winter, especially if you enjoy outdoor workouts in the summer, so the key is to switch it up if you need to and find ways to be active within your normal activities.
Play with the kids, take the stairs, park a little farther than usual to get those steps in - little habits make a big difference, and promote a healthy lifestyle all around.
6 —
Eat antioxidant rich foods.
Incorporate berries, citrusy fruits, leafy green vegetables, beans, nuts and healthy fats like salmon and avocado to support your skin below the surface. Remember: healthy skin starts within and the food we eat has a direct impact on our body, both internally and externally.
7 —
Don’t overdo it on makeup
Overdoing it on makeup can have a drying effect on your skin, especially if you are wearing heavy products that strip the skin of its natural oils. For daily wear, skip the heavy foundation and concealer, and instead choose products that promote a healthy glow.
