If you’ve ever had to try to guess at what color makeup to buy, or bought a foundation or concealer that didn’t quite blend the way you expected, it might be helpful to know your skin’s undertones. Not to be confused with skin tones, there are 3 different types of undertones: warm, cool and neutral. Read on to find yours.
But first, what’s the difference between the types of undertones?
Warm undertones include golden, yellow or peachy undertones, and are usually associated with deeper skin tones and eye color. Cool includes pink, red or bluish undertones. Neutral is a mixture of both warm and cool. Both cool and neutral undertones tend to have fairer skin and lighter eye colors.

Consider your skin’s reaction to the sun.
Sun exposure has a direct ability to reveal the skin’s undertones based on the it’s reaction to the sun. If you burn easily, you’re a cool undertone. If you tan easily, you’re a warm undertone. If you burn and tan, you’re a neutral undertone.

Check your veins.
The color of your veins are also very telling in revealing your skin’s undertones. If your veins appear green, you have warm undertones. If you see blue in your veins, you have cool undertones. Neutral undertones can see a mixture of both.
Knowing your undertones works best for correctly matching foundation and concealer, but it can also be used to select makeup colors to try, or even when shopping for clothing.
If you have cool undertones:
Opt for jewel tones like purple, green, pink and black to bring out your skin’s radiance.
If you have warm undertones:
Earth tones like yellow, orange, and brown will always look amazing on you. You may also choose jewel tones if you want a pop of color or more vibrant look.
If you have neutral undertones:
There isn’t one particular color palette that you gravitate toward, as all are complementary to you. Explore different colors to determine your preference.
