How Waterless Beauty Products Can Save Your Skin and Reserve the Earth

Waterless beauty products have been taking over beauty bags everywhere and for good reason. At a time when some products contain more than 85% water, this new wave in the beauty industry makes a big statement in sustainability and can provide more benefits to your skin.

But first, what is waterless beauty?

Waterless beauty is exactly what it sounds like: beauty products made without water. This innovative practice of formulating makeup and skincare without water takes into account the environmental impact of overusing a vital natural resource when some people don’t even have clean water to drink. We have seen firsthand the impact of water shortages happening in many nations, and many beauty companies (including Liplove) have taken a responsible stance from the start by formulating without water and being mindful of water waste during production processes.

Some waterless beauty products even go a step further with recyclable packaging and refill programs to minimize the harm to the environment. At a basic level, however, waterless beauty does not include water in the formula.

The benefits of waterless beauty

You might notice that many of your beauty products contain water (or aqua to make it look fancy) as the first ingredient. This is not always because water is the most beneficial ingredient to you and your skin, but because when it comes to formulations, adding water makes the rest of the ingredients stretch. Sorry to break it to you, but most beauty companies prioritize their bottom line over your skin, and that’s just the facts of the industry.

The number of watered down, ineffective, chemical-laden products on the market moved us to create a new standard at Liplove.

The science behind waterless beauty

The introduction of water into a formulation adds the need for a preservative, aka an inorganic chemical, and a lot of times, that means a recipe for disaster as it relates to the impact on our skin, cells, and body composition.

Think about it like this: our bodies are made to self regulate and act in sync with the earth. So everything that we need can be found within ourselves and our environment. That is why plants are the focal point of every formulation at Liplove and why waterless beauty works.

Waterless beauty products, by design, have a higher concentration of active ingredients and botanical extracts because that is what they are typically comprised of - without water, fillers, and additives. Many times, you will notice with waterless beauty that there are less ingredients listed. That is because there is no need to add complex chemicals and man-made synthetic compounds when dealing with ingredients that are of the same nature.

Waterless beauty is the new skin superfood

You may be thinking: my skin is dry and it needs water, or my skin is oily so it needs water to balance it out. So let me break it down to you like this. All oils are not oily or greasy, nor is dry skin a sign that your skin needs water.

There are categories of oils (all derived from the crushing of plants, seeds, or flowers). Some oils are heavier than others and should be avoided if you already have oily skin. Others (and some of my favorites) like jojoba, rosehip, and sunflower oils are very lightweight and have a similar composition to the oil that your skin naturally produces. So they serve as a balance and neutralizer to bring out the best in your skin.

For example, you may have noticed when wearing a full face of water based products that your skin starts to look dull, or the next day, your skin might not be as radiant without the makeup. You might even notice that if you wear a full face of water based foundation several days in a row, you start to break out or your skin has a negative reaction. That is because water based products introduce a number of elements to your skin that are not beneficial beyond the surface. Beware of terms like mattifying or 24 hour wear because those effects are created by inorganic chemicals that are doing more harm than good with repeated use over time.

On the flip side, waterless beauty products deliver more benefits because plant oils and botanical extracts in their pure form, without being watered down, are rich in vital nutrients that your skin needs to flourish - with and without makeup.
