7 Reasons Why You Don’t Need Foundation — And What to Use Instead

There was a time in my life when you would never catch me without foundation. Whether I was going to the grocery store for a few things or even to run a few simple errands, to me, the equivalent of being put together meant wearing foundation, and probably filling in my brows a bit, since we’re being honest.

But now, two full years into being completely foundation free, I have discovered the freedom that comes with skipping foundation altogether, and my skin is better because of it. So, without further ado, I share with you my top 10 list of reasons why you should skip the foundation, and what to do instead for naturally glowing skin that makes you feel like your best, most beautiful self.

1 —

Foundation can cause breakouts

Have you ever noticed when you are wearing a full face of makeup for extended periods of time, or even when you accidentally fall asleep in your makeup, that your skin looks exhausted the next day? Maybe you get dry spots or a few bumps, and not to mention your skin looks like she had a rough night. That’s because ingredients like silica and talc deprive the skin of essential nutrients, leading to skin irritation, dehydration and sometimes acne.

2 —

Foundation can clog pores and make your skin less vibrant

In the short term, foundation can seem like the best solution to make your skin appear more vibrant and even. But with repeated daily use for extended periods of time, foundation can cause more harm than good, especially without the proper skincare routine.

3 —

Foundation can disrupt your skin’s natural moisture barrier

Particularly if you have dry or oily skin, and depending on the ingredients, foundation can wreak havoc on your skin’s sebum production. Some foundations cause dry skin to become even more dry, and water-based foundations can make oily skin go awry.

4 —

Because your natural skin is already beautiful

Beauty companies thrive on insecurities, and that’s coming from a beauty brand founder. Now listen, I will be the first to tell you that your real skin is already beautiful. Makeup is just a bonus. Plus, if you are unhappy with blemishes or dark spots on your skin, start with addressing your skincare routine rather than a temporary fix like makeup.

5 —

The ingredients in your foundation could cause serious damage to your health

The main toxins found in makeup are called parabens (look for methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl, specifically, in your ingredient names to quickly find these culprits.) Parabens are often added to cosmetics to prevent product spoilage and help extend the shelf life when a product is water-based (you’ll know if aqua/water is the first ingredient). The bad news is that parabens may be cancer causing. Research has shown that they have been found in breast cancer tumors, and they can be absorbed through the skin and into the blood stream.

6 —

Depending so heavily on foundation to feel more confident can actually do the opposite

When I wore heavy makeup everyday while working in corporate, I began to rely on makeup to hide my insecurities. It was almost like every layer became more of a comfort zone, and after a while, I didn’t like what I looked like without makeup. I say this from personal experience: at the end of the day, when the makeup is off and it’s just you looking at yourself in the mirror, you have to love who you see. If you don’t, who you are around others will begin to reflect any insecurity that is deep within.

7 —

Foundation really isn’t necessary to achieve that flawless finish you desire from your makeup

You’re shocked? Just hear me out.

I created Liplove because I personally needed a change, and the more I talked to other women, the more I realized they craved it too: a product that would still make them feel like themselves and feel good about what they were putting on their skin.

Now you may be wondering: what does that have to do with lip gloss?

Well, Liplove is more than a lip product. You can highlight with it, contour, wear it as blush, eye shimmer, and anything you can think of.

And while it’s not considered full coverage makeup, it give you just a tint of coverage on your skin and the mineral based colorants reflect light like a prism, so it literally brings out your natural glow.
