How to Heal Chapped Lips Naturally
Because the skin on our lips doesn’t contain any oil glands, and it is thinner than the skin on other parts of the body, it can be more prone to chapping and flaking, especially in the winter. If you want soft, moisturized lips, here are three easy ways to heal your lip beyond the surface and prevent chapping.
1. Exfoliate your lips regularly
Exfoliating helps remove the dead, flaky skin on your lips and reveal the fresh skin underneath. Exfoliate with a lip scrub on a regular basis but beware of lip scrubs that include synthetic chemicals and fragrance that could cause irritation. The products you use on your lips are the fastest to be ingested into the body while eating and drinking, so check your labels and throw out anything that is doing more harm than good.
Pro tip: if you use an oil cleanser, put a little on your lips when cleansing your face then rub your lips together while you are massaging the oil on your face with your fingers. This saves time and makes for a good multipurpose moment with your oil cleanser so you don’t have to buy more products.
2. Drink enough water
Dry, cracked lips are a sign of dehydration so make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Go for water before any other liquid in the morning to help with intake throughout the day. Use a large water bottle to hold yourself accountable, and stay away from sodas and sugar loaded drinks, as they tend to dehydrate.
Think of water as the ultimate skincare because it replenishes the natural vibrance of the skin better than any product can. All in all, a good skincare routine starts with drinking water and eating the right foods.
3. Just say no to drugstore chapstick
Any chapstick that contains camphor, menthol or petrolatum is actually drying your lips. Choose instead a lip balm based in plant oils, butters, and other natural ingredients.
The products you use in your facial and oral care routine could also be impacting the skin on or around your lips. Always read product labels and stay away from irritants like alcohol (sometimes referred to as alcohol denat) and fragrances in skincare, as well as sodium lauryl sulfate in your toothpaste.
If your lip care routine is in need of an upgrade, follow this easy, two-step routine for soft, moisturized lips.
After washing your face, wash your lips. Yes, you ready that right. Now, this doesn’t have to be an exfoliation step, warm water and a soft towel will do. Gently wipe your lips and any flaky skin will wash right off too.
After washing your lips, use a natural, nourishing oil to treat your lips to a soothing moisture moment. We love using our Rose Glow for this step because it combines nutrient rich oils with roses, a powerful source of hydration that also works to keep the skin smooth.
